That jacket?! Oh why that jacket? You know the Sex and the City episode where Carrie strongarms everyone into going to Atlantic City so they can all be together for Charlotte’s birthday despite the fact that Atlantic City is the last place Charlotte would want to be period, let alone celebrate her birthday there? In that episode, Charlotte gets so depressed at turning thirty something that she breaks down and buys a horrible, sparkly dress at the casino store and basically gives up (again) and decides to be an AC ho for about twenty minutes. I never believed that AC hotel boutiques could be that bad until, a few weeks ago, I saw the carnage for myself when I got talked into spending a few days there. The first day was fine, I went to the outlets and got some cute stuff but the second day there was a mini hurricane and I was confined to the hotel so I went to the hotel boutique just to see if the horror of that episode was real.

It was because I’m almost 100% certain that I saw that jacket there.

I LOVED Laura’s dress. The fit, the color all worked together like a symphony of elegance. Kristin’s jumpsuit was fantastic and her accessories were spot on. Those bracelets!!! Even though I didn’t love her shoes, in the context of her overall look, they worked. Her jumpsuit was printed silk and that doesn’t always photograph well so I’m sure it looked much better in person.

The thing I’ve come to realize is that I will always hate what Erica wears on the red carpet. Casual Erica is a different story but Red Carpet Erica and I just will not ever agree. This is tragic and I cop to my bias against “party sleeves”. Cutouts should be on the body, not the arms. Why is always black with her? I see she’s been working with Sima Kumar who also styles Kristin Kreuk….

Mr. K (now Marla) was my sophomore year religion teacher. She was a wonderful, inspiring presence who treated her students with respect for their intellect as well as their overall humanity. I am ashamed that my alma mater refuses to accord her that same respect due to the ignorance of one parent who decided that a transgender teacher had no place in a Catholic school.

While I have no opinion on arming teachers, these examples do not correlate to what happens in school shootings. These are two cases of assassins aiming for one target. School shootings usually involve someone trying to pick off as many targets as possible with little thought as to who the targets actually are.

Fashion is also fun, at least for some of us. While I’m the first person to object to the social expectation that women be visually pleasing creatures, as long as I’m in that jail, I’m gonna take joy where I can get it.

Aesthetics aren’t the enemy of feminism; social codes that require women to meet certain aesthetic principles, and to be constantly putting in time, effort and money in the service of femininity, are the enemy. Fight the system, not the people who do their best to operate in it, or, God forbid, take a little pleasure where they can find it. Gendered fashion requirements are bad. Enjoying the self-expression and aesthetic appeal of clothing? Girl, go ahead and enjoy your new shoes.

That’s the central issue though, isn’t it? That fashion is a thing girls enjoy, and so therefore it must be silly and stupid. There’s nothing that makes an afternoon of shopping any sillier than an afternoon watching football; there’s nothing inherently less useful about a handbag than a new video game. But because fashion and clothes are stereotypically feminine pursuits and sports are stereotypically masculine, fashion is frivolous and sports are awesome. Women who spend money on themselves are self-involved. Men who do are either dapper or early adapters of the gadget du jour or just “that guy with the boat”.

Men, in fact, spend more money on consumer products than women. They spend $11 a day more on average, and they’re less likely to be the kind of smart shopper who compares prices and returns items they don’t like. But men aren’t considered frivolous spenders, because the connotations of the very word “frivolity” are feminine.

Men are also the ones enjoying the lion’s share of the money and the fame for women’s “shallow” interest in fashion. They outnumber female designers and they get more recognition. The New York Times noted in 2005 that The Council of Fashion Designers of America had given its prestigious annual award to young talent to 29 men and eight women. While male designers have taken home the Womenswear Award 13 out of 18 years, a woman has never won the CDFA Menswear award.
